5 REASONS AND SOLUTIONS TO CLEAR THE PMP EXAM AT 1ST ATTEMPT

REASON 1: More often than not, candidates tend to go for the exam with the feeling: “Oh! The PMP exam will be a cakewalk for me, the Senior Project Manager, with 7 years of experience in project cracking.” And subsequently, do not study properly.
SOLUTION: Make a study plan that you can stick to. Begin with reading the PMBOK Guide at least twice, cover-to-cover, before you appear for the exam. The guide hasn’t been the Bible for PMP aspirants for decades for no reason. READ IT! It will give you both, practical and theoretical knowledge, to crack the exam.

REASON 2: Very often PMP exam takers fail to refer to proper study material while preparing for the exam.
SOLUTION: Take a lot of sample tests. Keep a good PMP preparation workbook handy. Take an online course for specialized training.

REASON 3: The PMP exam is known to test candidates for attention to detail and tend to resort to verbose fluff to derail them from the real deal. Many candidates often miss crucial points while attempting the paper, which becomes a major reason of failure in the exam. Shedding more light on this, PMP expert Saket Bansal says: Candidates do not read the test paper carefully: They look at the given options and if they think option 1 or 2 is right, they skip the other options. This can prove fatal.
SOLUTION: Break the verbal web. Read. And Re-Read. This is the best way to eliminate confusion. By re-reading all questions, especially the ones that contain negative words such as “not” “least” or “except”, you will not miss out on anything crucial. Check again if doubt persists. Look for important pointers – “all”, “most”, “some”, “none” and other keywords like input, output, tools and project management. The PMI gives you ample time to complete the test.

REASON 4: Terminology failure is said to have plagued PMP aspirants for ages now. Candidates often lose vital points by confusing similar sounding terms or replacing one with the other.
SOLUTION: Precision is the key here. You may not be accurate but being precise is of utmost importance in the PMP exam. Understand notation, use of words and difference between similar terms. Understand that the Project Team is different from the Project Management Team just as plan is different from baseline.

REASON 5: Experts, over decades, have booed the lack of strategy as a major kill-bill in the PMP certification exam. The takers, more often than not, are professionals with a job which takes up most of their time and energy. This, coupled with the confidence (or over-confidence) in their own professional smartness, tends to blur their understanding for the need of a proper strategy to clear the PMP exam.
SOLUTION: Win the PMP battle with a proper strategy. Prepare a SWOT analysis. Understand your Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat. Take on one challenge at a time and prepare accordingly. The race here is not to be swift but to the precise.

  1. My PMP preparation span over 5 months. First two months for only PMBOK reading. I admit, I didn’t understand much of it but was good enough to get the basic ideology of projects, processes, knowledge areas & PMBOK structure. Then I joined ExcelR Solutions Institute. After training, I completed the thorough reading from Headfirst & covered the chapter wise questions. It took 2 months to cover all content from Headfirst. Then I scheduled my exam date & according to plan for my end phase study & 7 days leave just before the exam. I covered nearly 2500 question (many of them were repeated). This was my best shot of preparation…I believe. Then finally cleared PMP exam.
